Herbert von Karajan, originally christened Heribert Ritter von Karajan, was born in Salzburg on April 5, 1908. At the early age of 3, he was already taking piano lessons from Franz Ledwinka, director of the Mozarteum Orchestra.

Karajan's career as a conductor was exceptional: During his life he became

  • Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic,
  • Director of the Vienna State Opera
  • Director of the Salzburg Festival
  • and in 1967, founder of the Salzburg Easter Festival.

Herbert von Karajan is one of the most important Austrian conductors of the 20th century.
