Joseph Mohr / Stille Nacht

"Silent Night" is the world's most famous and most popular Christmas song. This beautiful Christmas melody has its origins in the SalzburgerLand, just a few kilometres from the city of Salzburg itself.

In Oberndorf bei Salzburg, or so the legend has it, it was a priest, Josef Mohr, who wrote the text to "Silent Night", while Franz Xaver Gruber composed the accompanying melody two years later. On December 24, 1818, the song is presumed to have been given its first performance by Josef Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber. Since that time, the Christmas song has been translated into several hundred different languages.

In the Salzburg wax museum, you have a unique opportunity to gaze on Josef Mohr, the "father" of this song. The wax figure of Josef Mohr is one of the most popular exhibits in this unique museum.
